We aim to provide essentials for all of those in need in our community.

About

The Highlands Emergency Council has been serving families in the Highlands area since 1982. They started off in the Highlands Library, but in 1982, volunteers built the building on Poplar Street that still exists today. The center has been run by volunteers since then.

We are proud to be able to support and help our neighbors in Highlands and the surrounding areas. A vast majority of these people needing help are employed, but still need help in their day to day living. Thanks to the gracious donations from our community, we can be there for them.

Meet the Team

  • Teresa Speed

    ACTING PRESIDENT

Teresa Speed has been a part of the Highlands Emergency Council since 1983! As acting president, Teresa oversees the big picture of the organization and keeps everything on track.

Teresa says, "If we can make a difference in others lives, then we will do all we can to make life a little easier for those that are struggling.”

  • Marie Johnson

    LEAD VOLUNTEER

Marie Johnson started volunteering at the Emergency Council in 2019 after retiring from working. She dove right in and is our most consistent volunteer, working 6 days a week, often coming in at 6:30 in the morning to get set up for the day.

Her compassion for others and her relentless good nature and smiles for everyone makes all who come to the Emergency Council feel seen, valued, and welcome.

“I enjoy helping others however I can, it gives me a purpose in life.”
